Marc Whiteman's second half goal was enough to prolong Lewes's season for at least another two days as the division one south champions triumphed over their north division counterparts.

The next stop for the Rooks in their quest for a place in the Conference South is a trip to Basingstoke tomorrow, followed by another away game on Saturday at Harrow Borough or Kingstonian if they are successful against their Premier Division opponents.

The Rooks dominated the opening half hour without managing to make the breakthrough their efforts deserved.

Ochea Ipka had the first half-chance of the afternoon with only two minutes on the clock, but his header from Danny Davis's corner just cleared the crossbar.

Junior Kadi was then denied a spectacular opener by Delroy Preddie's fingertip save and Whiteman's overhead kick went just over as the home side continued to live dangerously.

By half-time the game had become more even and Yeading's 33-goal striker DJ Campbell scooped a good chance wide as the hosts began to enjoy much more possession.

A late challenge on Paul Kennett ended his participation just before the interval, but substitute Barry Moore almost made an immediate impact with a long-range effort which Preddie scrambled behind at the expense of a corner.

After the interval, Steve King's men were forced on the defensive as Yeading stepped up a gear, but chances remained few and far between until the decisive breakthrough on 73 minutes.

Davis's cross was not properly cleared and Whiteman angled his header across Preddie and into the far corner to send a sizeable contingent of Rooks fans into raptures.

Manager Steven King said: "It was a massive performance by the lads, especially if you looked at Yeading's home form this season.

"They had lost just two, drawn one and scored 70 goals, so to beat them and keep a clean sheet was fantastic.

"I looked at the odds before the game and the bookies had us at 11-4 and Yeading were even. I didn't mind that because I like being the underdog. We were all over them before we scored our goal. Then they battered us, but our defending was unbelievable."
