Albion manager Mark McGhee today labelled reaching the play-offs an irrelevance unless his side goes on to clinch an immediate return to the First Division.
Saturday's 1-0 home win over relegated Notts County made sure of a top six spot but McGhee will only celebrate if the Seagulls end up winning the final in Cardiff on May 30.
"There was no emotion whatsoever from me," he said.
"I think it's irrelevant. I know everyone enjoys the play-off games, I do as well.
"Of course I want to be in them if that is what it takes, but if we don't win them we are still in the Second Division, so we have achieved absolutely nothing so far."
Albion are up to fourth and victory in their closing fixture at Wrexham on Saturday will ensure they play the return leg at Withdean in the semi-finals of the play-offs.
"It sets us up nicely for the last game of the season, to consolidate in the top four to try and get that second play-off game at home," McGhee said. "I think that is a good thing, partly from the atmosphere point of view.
"The second game will be played on the Thursday evening (May 20) and there is a better atmosphere at Withdean for evening games. I think that could be significant."
