Hastings star Peter Tadros was hoping to gain his seventh open win of the season in the Hampshire RC ten-mile time trial at Fontwell, but was narrowly beaten into second place.
The event was won by Petersfield rider Ben Instone (A3 CRG) in 20min.28sec.
Tadros (In Gear) was just nine seconds slower but had the consolation of leading his club to another team win, with Jon Sharples (20min.50sec) finishing third and James Dear (21min.36sec) sixth.
Harry Featherstone (Eastbourne Rovers), 71, recorded 23min.44sec and beat his target time by 8min.46sec to win the veterans' handicap award.
Brighton Mitre's Nick Harvey (21min.49sec) finished ninth and was the fastest veteran.
Harvey clocked 1hr.18min.9sec the following day to finish sixth in the 32km New Forest time trial, won by Paul Pickup (Liphook Cycles) in 1hr.15min.11sec.
The Addiscombe CC 25 at Broadbridge Heath was won by Lawrence Harding (Willesden) in 52min.44sec.
Tadros, last year's winner, did not enter but Sussex still had a man on the podium as Steve Dennis (East Grinstead) finished third in 54min.3sec The course for GS Stella's ten-mile time trial on Saturday has had to be changed due to roadworks, but the headquarters is still at Washington village hall, with the first rider off at 6.30am.
The Sussex riders include Brighton's Mike Coyle (Etoile) and Worthing's Chris McNamara (Team Synergy) who won a stage and was third overall in the recent Surrey three-Day race. Four circuit race meetings will take place on Friday evenings at Hove Park this season. The dates are July 9 and 23, August 6 and 13.
Only one in ten people get on a bike once a month even though they realise the health benefits of cycling, a new report has shown.
Two thirds of Britons never use a bike for exercise although half of 1,000 adults surveyed said they would cycle more often if saddles were more comfortable.
