I am intrigued by the name of a place near Halland, East Sussex, called Terrible Down.
I have scanned history books but, apart from battles at Hastings and Lewes and the bombardment of Arundel Castle in the Civil War, I can find no other engagement.
As the rebel, Jack Cade, was killed near Heathfield, I wondered if there was a connection but he fought at Sevenoaks.
Was it just a skirmish, but rather bloody, for it to be remembered? Or perhaps just a single, awful incident?
