Bob Novis agonisingly missed out on a medal in the World Championships for the second time when he finished fourth in the 50-54 age group in Madeira.
Two years after suffering a puncture when set for gold in Mexico, the Brighton Phoenix athlete never recovered from a poor transition stage following the swim.
Novis was just two seconds off the lead at that point but slipped down to fifth after the 10km cycle before a good run enabled him finish fourth in 2hr.18min.28sec.
Don Parker, from Hove, im-proved on his previous best position of 29th to finish 17th in the 55-59 age group. In his fourth appearance at the World Championships Parker clocked 2hr.35min.01sec.
Fiona Jamie was 22nd in the 45-49 age group in 2hr.50min.01sec while Brighton Phoenix clubmate Sue Hudson was 37th in the 50-54 group in 3hr.54min.05sec.
Brighton fireman Mark Archer followed up his 50th place in the World Aquathlon Championships by finishing 70th in the 30-34 age group in 2hr.28min.03sec.
