I write in response to your editorial and article about anti-social behaviour in Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford (The Argus, May 4) where I am district police commander.

Fact: Burglaries of people's homes are down compared to last year.

Fact: Robberies are down compared to last year.

Fact: Theft of and from vehicles are down compared to last year.

Fact: Government figures state crime in the Lewes district is low compared to other parts of the county and country.

Fact: Lewes district is continually locking up its 'career' criminals and our detection rates are currently one of the best in the Sussex force.

Although 'Seahaven' has recently experienced increased criminal damage and incidents of anti-social behaviour, my officers are working tirelessly to ensure that these crimes (committed mainly by children in our own communities) are properly investigated, utilising the criminal and anti-social behaviour laws available to us.

If you are still in doubt about my team's resolve to make Lewes district even safer, watch this space.

-Robert S Gough, Chief Inspector, Lewes District Commander
