Recently, the Brighton Centre has come in for some unfair criticism.

Living practically next door, I go there frequently to see concerts, ice shows, the Brighton Bear's basketball games and to visit exhibitions and conferences. It is the only flexible venue in the city capable of hosting such a range of events.

Built in the Seventies, it has stood the test of time. Performing here this year are Westlife, Daniel Bedingfield, Chris De Burgh and Deep Purple (to which I will be going). As a rock fan I see the Brighton Centre as the only suitable venue locally that could cater for this type of music.

All the gigs I have been to have been breathtaking. If the acoustics are not the studio quality I am used to in the studios of Pete Waterman, they are still far superior to Earls Court or Wembley. Also, it may not be as intimate as the Dome was/is, but it is still very good when playing to a full house. Parking could be better but that is a council issue.

While I am excited about the prospect of a new centre, I think we should acknowledge the value of the building it is replacing. In terms of economy and promotion of the city, it has been immeasurable. So let's all say thank you to the staff of the Brighton Centre and celebrate all that they have achieved.
