A nurse whose complaints helped silence the Brighton Festival Club said today she had been driven up the wall by late-night noise.

She was one of three neighbours who complained about music from the Spiegeltent in Pavilion Gardens.

The city council has issued a noise abatement notice banning live music after 10.30pm.

The nurse, who is in her 30s and lives with her husband in a flat, said: "I'm not a party pooper."

She had to be sent home early from a shift at the Royal Sussex County Hospital because she was so tired after only four hours' sleep in two nights.

She said: "You could hear the music through earplugs until 2am at weekends. You could hear all the words of the songs, even with the windows closed.

"I am a nurse who has to be alert throughout my shift, which includes administering drugs. My partner and I live above a pub and we accept there is some background noise, but we would never have got this flat if there had been a disco next door.

"We enjoy pubs and clubbing and we have been enjoying events at the festival.

"The Spiegeltent was supposed to house a festival club, not a disco.

"Every time the doors opened to let people out, the sound boomed.

"We had the noise monitored from our flat. It was toned down after the first weekend but we could still hear it.

"The decision to issue the noise abatement order was the council's, not ours.

"People should realise that the centre of Brighton is becoming more and more of a residential area and respect the wishes of the people who live there.

"I resent the view that as we live in the centre of the city we should expect noise or move somewhere else.

"The festival manager, Jane McMorrow, would be the first to complain if someone set up a disco just outside her front door for three weeks.

"We have got no complaints with the way the council has dealt with this.

"It has done everything correctly.

"With the quieter music playing in the tent at night a compromise has been reached.

"People can enjoy the atmosphere of the tent and discuss the festival while respecting the wishes of the people living nearby."

Her husband, who works shifts at Gatwick airport, said: "We were concerned when we read there was going to be an event in Pavilion Gardens up until 2am on some nights.

"We contacted Jane McMorrow and she left a message on our answering machine which said, 'I can absolutely assure you noise will not be an issue'.

"In fact, the noise from the tent prevented us from sleeping and I think anyone else in the same position would have complained."
