The problem outlined in your article "Boy banned from going to the school next door" (The Argus, April 30) largely stems from the council's timidity in tackling the mismatch in the intake of Balfour Infant and Balfour Junior schools.
While there was consultation last year on a possible merger, one option was noticeably absent from the debate - that the intake to Balfour Infant should be reduced so that there is a balance between the two schools.
Of course, this would be politically awkward since a number of children would have to go to elsewhere but it would nevertheless help to achieve the Council's stated goal of increasing the roll at neighbouring undersubscribed schools.
Only this would end the absurd position where (a) more than two thirds of the current Balfour Junior roll is from outside its catchment area (b) Balfour Infant is ludicrously overcrowded and (c) borderline cases on catchment boundaries are penalised because it is easier to let in a few children from further away than the larger number on the boundary.
