A post-mortem examination is due to be held on a man who was crushed to death when the trench he was in collapsed.

Landscape gardener Karl Achermann was buried up to the neck in mud following the accident on Tuesday.

Despite frantic efforts from his workmates and the emergency services, the 43-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Achermann, originally from Wales but staying at Barnsden Farm, Duddleswell, near Crowborough, was part of a team of gardeners working in the grounds of Greenbanks, a plush detached home in Shepherd's Hill, Buxted, near Uckfield.

He is believed to have been driving a digger which dug the trench.

He went to inspect the trench when one of the side walls apparently collapsed, covering him with mud.

The post-mortem will be held later this week and an inquest at a later date. An investigation has been launched by the Health and Safety Executive.
