Superstar DJ Fatboy Slim is used to performing to hundreds of thousands of adoring fans.
But he gave his loyal Brighton following a chance to get up close and personal in an intimate performance to a capacity crowd at the King and Queen pub in Marlborough Place.
Hundreds of fans poured through the doors to watch the internationally-renowned DJ play his tunes from above a bar.
He was supporting band Jonny Quality's at their fourth gig in Brighton since they formed last year.
The DJ, who lives in Hove, will sample their music for his next album and has also promised to produce their debut once they are signed by a record label.
He said: "If the Beastie Boys had sex with a stray cat while the Jam were watching, Jonny Quality would be their love child. Watch out for a guest appearance on the next Fatboy CD for more."
His personal assistant and close friend Emma Coquet added: "I have never seen him look like that at a gig before - he was really blown away."
The DJ, aka Norman Cook, had agreed to warm up the crowd under an alias but word soon spread across the city.
Wearing his trademark blue jeans and short-sleeved shirt, the DJ launched himself into a buoyant, if relaxed, show after arriving half an hour late.
Then Jonny Quality's eclectic mix of scratch DJ samples, loud acoustic guitars and tongue-in-cheek rockabilly seemed to win them a new fan base.
Norman endorsed Jonny Quality after a chance meeting with member Sean Moody during a night out in Brighton.
The band bombarded their hero with CDs until Cook finally agreed to collaborate.
Sean, 29, from Kemp Town, Brighton, said he was delighted to be supported by the city's most famous star.
He said: "It was an amazing night and I had the time of my life up there on stage. This was the climax to a couple of years of hard work and we hope it will just get better.
"A huge thank you to Norman for giving us a jump - to see a producer up there watching and digging it is a huge affirmation.
"I had a problem with English audiences because they often just stand there with their arms crossed but they just blew up and I loved it.
"It's good people are getting the joke and understand we don't take ourselves too seriously."
Sean arrived in Brighton last year after selling all his possessions and moving from San Francisco to launch his musical career.
The guitarist has been joined by scratch DJ Nick Dunn, drummer Steve Joseph and bassist and lead vocalist Pete York.
Jonny Quality are expected to perform in Brighton again in June after a break to write more material.
The quartet have already been approached by record labels and are hoping to negotiate terms to produce their first release.
