Letters have highlighted the problems of providing both adequate health care and acceptable incomes for our ageing population.
One correspondent even suggested the Tories might provide a solution.
The real certainty is that our over-65 population is growing exponentially and that any party that promotes a core philosophy of cutting taxes is either foolish or lying.
Projections for the relatively brief period of 1996-2011 in one of the South-East's typical regions shows an increase in the over-65 population of 30 per cent, a decline in the 0-15 population of 29 per cent and a fall in the 30-44 population of 32 per cent.
Don't believe any party that says it can cut taxes and improve the quality of life for all. As the ageing population grows so will their voice and their reluctance to bear the brunt of tax cuts that exclusively help the young, the fit and the economically productive.
