Your figures for the amount of money Brighton and Hove City Council might make from fining motorists in bus lanes were incorrect (The Argus, May 11).
If we really were able to raise £400,000 a day, we could make £146m a year - almost double the amount we currently raise in council tax.
The article was based on the notion these cameras would make a profit. They would not. Cameras would make a modest surplus in the first year but none at all thereafter.
Fines would not be £100. They are likely to be £60 or £30 for rapid payment.
We would catch nothing like the number of rogue drivers you counted. If those numbers continued there would be no point in having the scheme.
An education programme beforehand and a first fine would be enough to dramatically cut numbers.
Ideally, we would collect no fines at all as no cars would ever use the bus lanes. Cameras would be part of a joint effort between the council and transport providers to keep the city moving.
