Unfortunately, Mike Weatherby is completely wrong to think lack of car parking places is causing congestion (Letters, July 5).
It is the abundance of car parking places that generates traffic.
Underground car parking would do the same, as well as being prohibitively expensive. There is no evidence to prove roads are clogged up with people looking for somewhere to park.
Although Labour, Lib Dems and Greens are pro public transport, walking and cycling, this does not mean that they are anti-car, though they realise that reducing the level of traffic, mainly the private car, is the only answer.
Mike is right when he writes that a radical approach is needed. But we need to reduce the number of town centre car parks to reduce both congestion and pollution.
That would be really radical.
