Serbian trialist Zsombor Kerekes has been offered another chance by Albion to prove he is the target man they are looking for.

Manager Mark McGhee wants Kerekes to play in the friendlies at Southend tonight and Cambridge United on Saturday.

Kerekes, who carries a Hungarian EU passport, returned to Hungary after featuring in friendlies against Woking and Crawley.

McGhee said: "We are trying to get Kerekes back to look at him in these two games against League opposition.

"I liked him enough to think we shouldn't rule him out. We need somebody for Maheta (Molango) or Leon (Knight) to play with."

McGhee is still scouring the market after Chris Iwelumo's move to Germany. Kerekes has played for Hungarian clubs Debreceni VSC and Pecsi MFC, as well as Chinese side Tianjin Taida.

The 30-year-old could form a cosmopolitan partnership at Roots Hall tonight with Molango, the Congo under-21 international signed last week, although former Southend utility player David Lee is in contention to start against his old club as well.

"If Kerekes arrives he will start with Maheta, if Kerekes doesn't come then it will be Maheta and probably David Lee," McGhee said.

"He played extremely well up front in the first half against Stevenage on Monday and then in the second half when he went into midfield."

Swiss-born Molango, who has played in Spain and Germany, looks certain to make his English League debut in Albion's opening game at Reading a week on Saturday.

The dilemma for McGhee is who will partner him, with Knight starting a three-match suspension.

"Clearly, if Leon wasn't suspended then he would be playing this evening and we wouldn't be having the concerns we've got," said McGhee. "We are going to have to experiement a little bit.

"Maheta will hopefully play at Reading, then we have Jake Robinson, Gary Hart, David Lee and John Piercy, who is a little bit ill at the moment, or we are still out there talking to people about bringing in another striker either permanently or on loan.

"We are curtailed, as everyone knows, on the financial side. That's the way it is. I am not bawling about it, but people have to appreciate that.

"There are strikers I would love to bring here who would improve our team and give us a chance, but we cannot afford them so we have to look at players like Maheta, who is a good prospect.

"That is all he is at the moment and yet we are considering playing him at Reading because of the situation."

Tonight's squad also features trialists Alexis Nicolas from Chelsea, Albert Jarrett from Wimbledon and Darren Currie from Wycombe.

The Southend attack will be spearheaded by former Albion loan signing Wayne Gray, who scored twice in a 3-3 draw at Dagenham and Redbridge last Saturday.
