Has Brighton become blas to the charms of Fatboy Slim after being spoiled by the friendly neighbourhood superstar DJ for all these years?
Tee-ed up by the familiar platter of Boutique's tech house, beats and rap, Norman Cook entered the fray enthusing "Fatboy, that's me!" over pounding bass rhythms and obligatory home cheers. For a moment there was no doubt who was jumping the highest.
As he swung into action with some Seventies house before unleashing a few samples of new single Slash Dot Dash, the night began in mixed-up earnest. Girls invaded the stage and Cook reigned over the dance floor.
The man himself was refreshingly fun and accessible. At one point half the city seemed to join him on stage.
Far from hugging the celebrity limelight, he swapped notes and had his photo taken, hopped around in his inimitable way and looked very much at home.
As well he might. He's practically family now, after all.
