Considered by many the heroes of new Americana, Richmond Fontaine blend pedal-steel guitar, organ, guitar, bass, drums and vocals to achieve an emotional, big and open sound.
Hailing from Portland, Oregon, lyrically they specialise in narrated snapshots of life in which characters embark on road trips to nowhere or gaze emptily at derelict hotel signs.
Despite a fragile intensity and cast of losers, boozers and hapless lovers, there is something curiously uplifting about these tunes, which have been labelled literary rock 'n' roll.
