I have read the recent comments regarding supermarkets and the Sainsbury's superstore at West Hove with interest.
In my opinion, if that store is anything to go by, it is not surprising that Sainsbury's is losing its market share.
Although it is supposed to be open until 10pm it actually goes into shutdown mode from about 8pm even on a Friday evening.
The salad bar is now closing at 7pm, the fresh and cooked meat counters are closed at 9pm and even the lottery scratch cards are put away at 9pm. More recently there has been an obstacle course of restocking trolleys from 9pm onwards.
Combine this with a petrol station that closes earlier than many others, rarely uses one island of pumps and frequently runs out of fuel, it is not surprising the Sainsbury's group has financial problems.
My wife and I used to spend about £250 per week between the store and the fuel station. We now share that with other local outlets.
The store does not seem to realise customers who shop in the evening are entitled to the same service as any other customer.
If they cannot provide a proper service maybe they should consider a five or 10 per cent discount for evening customers to make up for the lack of facilities.
