Ken McCreadie got one over on his old mate Dave Winteron as Hailsham beat local rivals Eastbourne Town 2-1 to book their passage into the third qualifying round.
McCreadie is a former coach at Town where Winterton is boss and the two shared a drink after the game, although the Hailsham boss insisted victory was no shock.
He said: "Hailsham Town is not a small club and we should be expected to beat teams like Eastbourne Town.
"My boys worked very hard for this victory and I feel they deserved it, although Dave may see things differently.
"This club has a good tradition in the Vase and were now in the hat for the next round."
Paul Richardson guided in a Tobi Hutchinson free-kick before Peter Cooper's superb finish sealed Hailsham's win.
Eastbourne United went out to fellow County League outfit Whitehawk with a well-taken goal by Terry Sargeant.
Hawks boss Ian Chapman said: "It was a 1-0 hammering as we wasted at least 20 chances."
Carl Stabler's hopes of another FA Vase run with Littlehampton ended at Jubilee Field when Gavin Jones converted Simon Funnell's cross for Three Bridges.
Stabler took the Marigolds to the semi-finals in 1991, a fact not lost on Bridges manager Sammy Donnelly.
He said: "Carl has taken them to the semis before and they would have liked to have gone further. We are unbeaten for five games now and must build on this. We cant rest on our laurels and must look to improve."
Hassocks beat division two Peacehaven 2-0, although Robins boss Dave John admitted they were made to sweat before James Laing and Pat Harding struck in the last ten minutes, while Pagham triumphed 5-3 at Chipstead.
Division two Wick picked off Combined Counties Merstham, who have accounted for Selsey and Hassocks in the FA Cup this season, with Peter Christodoulou, Danny Curd and Mark Cooper netting.
Mile Oak comfortably beat Wessex League United Services Portsmouth 3-1.
Oakwood boss Bob Pyle gave his side a half-time telling off before they responded to sink Chessington United 4-3 with Mark Heavens (two), Gerald Manville and Zak Newman on target.
There were defeats for Arundel, Redhill, Shoreham, Southwick, Sidlesham, Sidley, Ringmer and Saltdean.
