This Government has been the keenest ever on listening to the people through referenda on important issues.

A Welsh Assembly went ahead by a referendum margin of 50.3 per cent to 49.7 per cent - a difference of fewer than 7,000 votes from a total of more than one million - while referenda votes led to the introduction of the Northern Ireland Assembly and Scottish Parliament.

Voters in many areas, including London, have been asked if they want a directly-elected local Mayor and referenda will soon be held to decide whether regional assemblies should be set up.

Councils have also been allowed to hold referenda on important local issues, such as the level of council tax.

In the Brighton and Hove referendum, 68 per cent of those who voted supported Albion's vision of a stadium for the community at Falmer.

Labour would be very wise to listen to those 44,985 people, including the three MPs for Brighton and Hove who all strongly support the stadium.

It is about time John Prescott stood up to the Falmer nimbys who would be content to see Albion go bust at the hopelessly inadequate Withdean. Falmer is the only suitable site.
