Conservationists continue to say nothing new should be built anywhere near - nor even in sight of - the Downs.

On that basis there would certainly have been no Goodwood, glorious or otherwise, nor chapel at Lancing College.

Come to think of it, Falmer village itself would never have risen from the turf except perhaps as a temporary settlement of wattle and daub.

History shows you can't stand still. Brighton has long been associated with bold, imaginative architecture such as the Royal Pavilion. Let's look forward to Falmer Stadium as the next stunning example.
