Burgess Hill got back to winning ways after Saturday's shock home defeat to the bottom club but the victory at lowly Banstead was less than impressive.
It came at a price as on-loan defender Marc Cable was sent off just two minutes from time for a second bookable offence.
After the last minute dismissal of Ben Andrews on Saturday it is an expensive time for Hillians, who are yet to face any of the teams in the higher reaches.
Assistant manager Chris White felt it was a much improved and more disciplined performance but the visitors did not have to be anywhere near their best to beat a side who have now picked up only two points from five home games.
Banstand did have a few chances but their finishing was truly awful and there never looked a way back for them after the visitors struck twice in 90 seconds late in the first half.
Darren Smith opened the scoring on 39 minutes with a well taken free kick from 25-yards and then a ball over the top by Cable released Steve Harper to set up Andrews for a simple finish.
A bad miss by home striker Simon Mitchell early in the second half was punished on 51 minutes when Kevin Townsend scored with a header after Blake could only push out Harpers dangerous cross.
