Steve Beerling has quit Horsham to join premier division side Peniel Academy.
It is a blow for the British League division one side because Beerling scored 50 per cent in the premier divison last season.
Captain Adrian Moore said: "We have two months to find a new player of a high enough standard for the next four matches in early December and my scouts are out working."
Brighton University are pushing for promotion to division one of the British League.
After beating Ashford and Horsham seconds, both by 7-1, the students are now third in the table.
Rose Rainton (Bexhill) and Wesley Bush-Harris (Brighton) are the top seeds at the Hollingbury Open at Bevendean School this weekend.
