ScottishPower has bought Shoreham Power Station.
The energy group already owned half the plant in Southwick but has now paid American Electric Power £26million to become sole owner and operator.
ScottishPower said the purchase would allow it to boost its energy business to match the significant growth in its UK customers without breaking the bank.
Executive director Charles Berry said: "We are delighted with this purchase which helps meet the needs of our fast-growing customer base.
"Buying generation capacity at about half the cost of building a new plant underlines our commitment to shareholder value and capital."
