More than two out of three Conservative Party constituency chairmen envisage a situation where Britain could pull out of the European Union, according to a survey yesterday.
Of the 110 chairmen who responded to the survey for BBC2's the Daily Politics programme last Monday, 71 disagreed with the proposition there were no circumstances under which Britain should withdraw from the EU.
Only 25 said they agreed, while 14 said that they did not know or refused to answer.
Meanwhile, 38 said the party's general election manifesto should include a firm commitment to cut the standard rate of income tax, as against 51 who disagreed and and 21 who did not know or refused to answer.
