What joy! It seems we are one step closer to the liberalisation of the archaic drinking laws (The Argus, October 5). What a shame we have to wait a year for them to come into play.

I would like to say to those who think this will cause people to "drink themselves to death", let's not forget that people do not have an infinite amount of money to spend on

alcohol.

So the fact that an establishment can open for 24 hours does not mean that the general populous can spend 24 hours downing pints of larger or whatever tipple tickles their fancy.

And let's face it, if someone wants to drink themselves to death, they can already buy enough alcohol in the off-licence, take it home and drink all day and night if they wish.

Surely the idea of relaxing the laws simply means that people will have a choice as to what time they choose to go out?

Relaxing the laws would mean, for instance, that we could have dinner before hitting the pubs.

I, for one, am pleased to hear that for the first time since the First World War, a Brit can choose when to go for a drink.
