Flights left Gatwick on time yesterday despite another strike by hundreds of baggage handlers in a dispute over workloads and the suspension of a union official.

Servisair, the firm which employs the workers, said disruption would continue to be minimised during further strikes tomorrow and next week.

The Transport and General Workers Union said yesterday's 12-hour walkout was solidly supported, with picket lines mounted at approach roads to the airport.

Servisair said the union convener at the centre of the row was being treated under a well-established disciplinary process.

"We believe it would be unfair to the remainder of the workforce to treat an individual differently just because he is a union official," said a company spokesman.

Director Andrew Saunders added: "We are ready and willing to meet at any time to resolve this dispute."
