These current NME darlings from North London released debut single She's Hearing Voices in February and it is already being sold on eBay for upwards of £40.
Such is the buzz surrounding their style of music which treads a fine line between funky rock and punk and is driven by high-energy guitars, infectious melodies and impassioned, angst-ridden vocals.
They have also gained a reputation for dynamic, entertaining live shows. Steve Lamacq has called them genius, MTV awarded them video of the week and they amassed plenty of radio plays and media mentions before they were even signed by Winchita in April.
"Every song we write sounds different," asserts vocalist Kele Okereke. "We're lucky because we pool all our ideas and we all have an input in the songs.
The best bands are the ones who are made up of individuals but work together really well, like, for example, Blur."
Kele met guitarist Russell Lissack at 1998's Reading festival and, impressed with each other's taste in music, they decided to advertise for other members to make up the band. Bassist Gordon Moakes and drummer Matt Tong were soon enlisted and agreeing on the game plan of getting their music heard by "people with common sense", they sent their demo to Franz Ferdinand.
The Scottish Matinee idols did get them a chance to play for Domino Records but the label didn't take them on. However, with their subsequent signing to Winchita this does not seem to have held them back.
"I think the first time the four of us practiced was when I realised things were going well," says Gordon. "After two or three gigs in this line-up, we knew that people were paying attention but it wasn't really until Lamacq played our song on the radio that I personally had a real feeling that people were sitting up and taking notice."
Now, of course, eBay prices confirm them as hot property.
"I'm basically really puzzled about it and faintly embarrassed, especially as so far we've had so little out," continues Gordon. "It's the kind of thing you think goes with the territory of being around for ages and having your early stuff made available. With us, there is no early stuff, it's all current.
We never planned it. At the time it came out, we weren't sure if they would sell at all."
