(Cert 12A, 113mins): Starring Dennis Quaid, Giovanni Ribisi, Miranda Otto and Hugh Laurie. Directed by John Moore
A remake of Robert Aldrich's perennial Sunday-afternoon favourite, John Moore's old-school adventure is perfect fare for those hankering for a MacGyver-meets-Lawrence-Of-Arabia-style tale about a group of plane-crash survivors who attempt to resurrect their aircraft in the hostile environs of the Gobi desert.
With a bunch of B-movie caricatures in place - hardy pilot (Quaid), spunky female (Otto), uptight Brit (Laurie) and shady potential saviour (Ribisi) - it's fair to say this is hardly a character-driven piece. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.
With gun-toting locals, unrelenting heat and a severe lack of water hampering their efforts, the group must put aside their differences and put their backs into the task of resurrecting their flying jalopy.
While not a patch on the original, Moore's version keeps enough of the fantastic original elements while adding plenty of new twists to ensure that, despite the odd stall, this is a decent effort.
