Sussex were indebted to a steady 88 from opener Richard Montgomerie as they set Yorkshire a target of 219 in their two-day friendly at Hove.
Montgomerie's 129-ball knock was important as no other batsman exceeded 27 after the hosts won the toss.
Yorkshire's reply began painfully slowly with Jason Lewry pinning Chris Taylor (9) in front as 15 came from the first 16 overs. But Anthony McGrath (38) took the visitors through to 76-1 by the close with opener Joseph Sayers on 23.
Montgomerie battled had for his runs and only registered two boundaries as Sussex were bowled out in 57.1 overs with John Blain taking 3-34.
