I feel hard done by. Bill Bailey accuses me of being a bigot, says I have acted deceitfully, attributes to me personally what is written in the Bible, misquotes the Word of God and finally says I have insulted the female half of the human race (Letters, March 25). Thank you Bill.

St Paul gives instructions on the different roles men and women are to play in the church in 1 Timothy chapter 2.

I have a real concern for women. I was married to one for almost 40 years and she was responsible for most of my happiest moments.

I also have a daughter, three grand-daughters and two daughters-in-law who all give me an immense amount of pleasure and support.

However, in recent years something has gone badly wrong in the way girls are brought up. They are copying the worst behaviour of boys - the immodest dress, the rowdy parties, drunkenness and promiscuity which often result in unmarried mothers requiring state support.

Some causes are obvious. Lack of government support for marriage, inadequate leadership from parents with often only one parent at home, militant permissive television but, above all, the appalling lack of understanding of the Word of God.

I used to put women on pedestals but I now believe the female sex needs to start setting higher moral standards if it is to regain the respect it used to enjoy.

Please do not tell me men are even worse. I already know that. But someone has to lead the revival.
