Scores of small white dogs from all parts of the county met for a stroll in the sun.

The fourth Westie Walk in Preston Park, Brighton, was the biggest yet, with 48 West Highland terriers and more than 100 people travelling from Haywards Heath, Crawley, East Grinstead, Billingshurst and Brighton and Hove for the three-quarter mile walk.

Cars slowed down to get a better look and people enjoying the warm weather stared as the troupe of fluffy dogs trotted by.

The walk takes place regularly in Brighton and Hove on the first Sunday of January, April and September but organiser Maura Toner, of Osborne Road, Brighton, is hoping to make it a national event.

She said: "It started off as a bit of a novelty. I just wanted to see how many local Westies there were and to see them all out together and it has grown since then.

"I wasn't expecting anything like the number of dogs that turned up on Sunday. One woman from Haywards Heath brought a large group with her.

"It was amazing to see all these cars arrive from different directions with Westies tumbling out of them. Every car seemed to have a Westie in it.

"Now we are hoping different groups around the country can have a walk on the same day at the same time."

The next walk takes place on September 4. For information email brightonwesties@hotmail.co.uk or visit www.meetup.com.
