An ageing hospital wing is to undergo an £800,000 facelift.

The west wing of Worthing Hospital was built in the late Sixties but its facilities are now out of date.

The wing houses 12 wards including the cardiac care and renal units.

The hospital's League of Friends is funding some of the refurbishment, which will take place during the next year.

Bill Banks, Worthing hospital's director of facilities, said: "After 40 years the fabric of the building, particularly the kitchens and bathrooms, is outdated and difficult to clean.

"The new bathrooms are specifically designed to be more user-friendly with electronic taps and wheelchair-accessible showers.

"Special finishes are being used to make them easier to clean. The design will reduce the spread of infection and save water."

More than £150,000 is being spent on new kitchens and £350,000 on replacing windows.

The League Of Friends has also funded a £45,000 laser for the hospital to help eye experts speed up treatment of sight problems, cutting the time for treatment from 30 minutes to just ten.
