Further to the discussion on school meals, I should like to thank Jim Nicholls (Letters, March 30) for explaining the situation with primary schools in West Sussex and putting so clearly what many of us think, namely that technology is seen to be more important than the wellbeing of children.
We have four grandchildren at primary schools in West Sussex.
The youngest has just finished his first term and can't understand why he can't have a hot dinner at mid-day, which he has been used to all his life, or indeed even a hot drink to warm him up in the recent cold weather.
They have no warm nourishment from breakfast at 8am until returning home at 4pm.
Mid-morning, they have cold water and a piece of fruit, which we are told is a healthy option, and a packed lunch at mid-day which, again, we are told has just as good nutritional value as a hot meal.
Do they really think this is suitable nourishment for growing children?
Generations of us had a third-of-a-pint of milk mid-morning and a hot school meal at mid-day and have grown up to be useful members of society. Mr Nicholls is quite right when he says it is almost abuse to treat our children in this way.
