Recent correspondence in The Argus letters page asked why there are so few women's names on Brighton and Hove buses.
To help redress the balance, might I suggest Phyllis Pearsall?
Mrs P (as she was known by her staff) invented the A-Z street map.
In the Thirties, this was a completely new concept in mapping. It was even looked down on at the time as "not a proper map" although this is difficult to believe when almost everyone must have an A-Z in their home or car nowadays.
There is a fascinating and inspiring biography of Phyllis Pearson - Mrs P's Journey by Sarah Hartley.
Although not strictly a Brightonian, Phyllis was educated at Roedean and spent most of her retirement in Shoreham.
Surely the next bus on the 2/2A route should commemorate her name?
