I am a regular visitor to Brighton. I have many friends in the area, a lot of affection for the place and I contribute to the local economy by visiting shops and restaurants.
However, if you introduce a congestion charge, I will cease to come to see your gorgeous city.
Without my car to travel the 60 miles, it will be impossible.
Public transport is not practical for me and I could not be confined by the tyranny of its schedules as I often travel home in the early hours.
I strongly object to being "mugged by a congestion charge" as Mike Weatherly, the Conservative candidate, so correctly expresses it.
The London congestion charge is a sham. If it was really about congestion, the charge would be much higher.
The way to get rid of congestion is to control buses - no bus lanes, smaller buses and no bus subsidies whatsoever.
This Government wants to return us to the Fifties as far as public transport is concerned. It wants us all to travel by bus and to this end it subsidises buses out of our taxes.
Furthermore, the bus companies actually fund an anti-motorist pressure group called Transport 2000. How fair is that?
Introduce a congestion charge and I won't come to Brighton any more, nor will many people like me and, as in London, your businesses will suffer a loss of turnover.
It's time to stop mugging the motorist and, if you really want a thriving, vibrant Brighton, defy Government philosophy and make your city motorist-friendly - make parking easy and plentiful and the main access routes bus-free.
