A stone Buddha sitting in the sea and a playground for adults are among pieces of art competing for financial backing.
Brighton and Hove Arts Commission's Making a Difference scheme yesterday announced a shortlist of 25 ideas for new events and projects in 2005 and 2006, at the Jubilee Library in Brighton.
Each project is bidding for cash from a £100,000 pot.
The shortlist includes Alister O'Loughlin's adult playground.
Mr O'Loughlin described the his piece as blending sculpture and live performance with the promotion of physical fitness.
Another project is Big Stone Buddha by Paul Harrington.
It is described as a large seated figure facing out to sea, placed midway between high and low tide, submerged and revealed by the changing tides.
The commission will distribute its funding to five winning ideas, which will be selected by an independent panel in May.
