Every shop targeted in a trading standards operation refused to sell cigarettes to an underage person.

A 13-year-old volunteer tried to buy cigarettes at 18 different shops on behalf of East Sussex Trading Standards.

Officers were pleased when all traders asked for proof the volunteer was over 16 and refused the sale when it was not provided.

Head of trading standards Brian Johnson said: "Smoking kills and the law surrounding under-age sales of tobacco is there to protect youngsters from becoming addicted to smoking at an early age.

"This is the result that we sought - no sales made and retailers asking for proof of age. No ID, no sale is the message for consumers and retailers alike."

Trading standards service can advise retailers on proof of age cards that are available and more details are available on 01323 418200 or at www.consumercomplaints.org.uk Over the next year the service will be attempting test purchases, using young people to buy a range of age-restricted products.

These will include alcohol, knives, spray paints and fireworks.
