Jean Calder's article "His name was Len" (The Argus, April 9) and "Take Mavis home" (Letters April 5) struck a chord with our family.
First, our dad was a PoW who died a few years ago, leaving our mum and us three and families.
Now mum, aged 80, has the onset of Alzheimer's and may have suffered for some years before. She has been supported by us for a long time.
She is now in a wonderful care home, safe and well.
The social services want to move her to another placement which is less expensive but has a bad report from the care home standards agency.
This would totally confuse her. She would also deteriorate in these surroundings, we are sure.
Second, if it was that easy to care for mum now, we would be doing it. We all have to work and are near retiring ourselves and have never been on benefits.
We dread to think what would happen if she had to go to hospital like poor Len in Jean's article.
Norman Baker is aware of our problem. The problem is much bigger than just us.
