I was fascinated to read Stanley Allen's letter about the visit of the late and former Prime Minister James Callaghan to Sussex County Cricket club.

His letter was couched in his normal witty form and I have often wondered if he realises the appreciation, respect and high esteem in which everyone at the club held him.

His humour was infectious and varied from dry to hilarious, not forgetting his professional administrative skills.

He did me the very great honour of having me made a member of the elite committee room. Regrettably, I rarely visited the holy portals.

In those days, close of play was at 6.30pm and it was often 8pm before I left the treatment room, when I considered it appropriate to return home to my long-suffering wife.

Stanley mentions Imran Khan. He was a wonderful chap and we related well to each other. At the beginning of the season I knew he would be the first player in the treatment room.

On one such occasion, I slapped an ice pack on his backside and, after a few minutes, asked if he was all right? He replied: "Bert, it is not cold enough!"

I had the pleasure of meeting Stanley again a few weeks ago. He hasn't changed. We had a mini-reunion, with Tony Buss, Peter Graves and Dennis Foreman.

Peter and Dennis still visit me regularly and we retell lovely stories, with Stanley usually in the frame.
