You've heard of the Westie Walks - now welcome to the Spaniel Strolls.

Gatherings of small, fluffy dogs have been proving quite a spectacle in Brighton's Preston Park of a Sunday afternoon.

Since the Westie Walks started last May, more and more of the cute canines have been turning heads as they enjoy an outing with their owners.

But why should West Highland terriers have all the fun?

Inspired by the success of Westie Walk organiser Maura Toner, of Osborne Road, Brighton, cocker spaniel owner Kirstine Rickards has planned a similar get together.

Her four-and-a-half-year-old dog Tepee will lead the way at the first cocker spaniel walk in Stanmer Park on Sunday.

Ms Rickards, 39, of Upper Gloucester Road, Brighton, said: "The next Westie Walk was coming up and I kept meeting people with young cocker spaniels.

"I remember when my dogs were young I wanted to get them to interact with other dogs of their own age.

"Cockers are very sociable dogs and seem to be able to recognise their own breed. I thought this would get them together and give the owners a chance to have a chat too."

Ms Rickards' said her 13-year-old collie springer Calamity Jane will be watching from a distance.

Although officially a cocker spaniel walk, Ms Rickards said she will not turn away other dog owners.

She said: "The park is open to everyone so if other people want to come that's fine. We are just planning to have a fun day and enjoy the walk."

Tepee is Ms Rickards' third cocker spaniel. When she first brought her home from a rescue centre in Wales the puppy was extremely nervous and had to be taught how to play.

Since then a walk in Stanmer Park has been a regular feature of every Sunday to help Tepee interact with other dogs.

After the success of the most recent Westie Walk at the beginning of April, Ms Toner is hoping to turn the walk into a national phenomenon.

She is urging Westie owners throughout Britain to stage a simultaneous stroll and has offered to help other groups get an event in their area organised.

Ms Rickards' Spaniel Stroll starts at 11am at Stanmer House. For more information, contact her on 07956 419859.
