Steve Harper is on target to finish the league's centenary season as top goalscorer after taking his tally to 34 on Saturday.
Harper struck twice in the first ten minutes but it wasn't enough to secure victory for Burgess Hill at Croydon Athletic.
The hosts' Matt Fowler grabbed a hat-trick as his side came from 2-0 and 3-2 down to win a thriller 5-3.
Fowler and Leon Johnson had levelled before half-time and although Nicky Sullivan restored Hillians' lead four minutes into the second half, Fowler struck twice in the next four minutes to make it 25 for the season before Johnson made the points safe in the 73rd minute.
Hillians' boss Gary Croydon said: "It would be brilliant if Steve could bag a brace next week against Wimbledon because I think that would secure top spot."
Play-off contenders Horsham came from behind to draw 1-1 at Fleet Town. The hosts took a first-half lead after Hornets goalkeeper Luke Burton spilled a shot but Gary Charman headed in Lee Carney's cross to equalise after the break.
Fleet had a player sent off for two bookable offences but Horsham could not make their numerical superiority count.
Assistant manager Tommy Warrilow said: "We've got the Brighton Charity Cup final on Tuesday and another league game and we will be looking to finish the season well so we can go into the play-offs with a bit of form."
