How pleasing it was to read the new learning centre at Cardinal Newman School is to be named after the nuns from the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Upper Drive, Hove (The Argus, April 14).
My memories of those nuns go back to the years of my childhood, the late-Twenties and Thirties.
My father, a veteran of the Great War, had seen very hard times, with jobs being almost non-existent when he returned home. He once walked from Brighton to Portsmouth to get a job, only to find there were no more vacancies and had to walk back again.
Fortunately, he obtained work as a gardener at the convent.
In the Thirties, my mother used to say to my brother and I, "Go and meet your father at the tram stop and help carry his bag home."
This was a job we loved. Inside were cabbages, cauliflower, fruit, custard and baked apple - all left over from meals at the convent.
Mum would take what she needed, the rest went on a barrow and I went around the Islingword Road area selling it for a few pennies.
Once a month, Dad would take us to the convent on Sundays to have tea with the nuns. Lovely memories.
