I was enjoying a pot of Earl Grey tea and a delicious slice of almond cake in the Mock Turtle, Pool Valley, on Saturday afternoon, when I noticed Jean Calder's illustrative piece on that very establishment (The Argus, April 23).
This, coupled with the poor weather that afternoon, may have had something to do with the lengthy queues outside - and the fact this small sanctuary from city bustle was bursting at the seams.
Jean Calder summed up the place beautifully.
Among the ever-growing virus of Starbucks, Cafe Neros and Costa Coffees in Brighton, the healthy and prospering Mock Turtle proves how a traditional and unchanging tea shop, with home-made snacks, loose-leaf tea and honest prices, not only survives but maintains a world-wide reputation.
Like Ms Calder, I also worry what will happen when the owners, Birthe and Cordon Chater, hang up their willow crockery.
I sincerely hope when that day comes, they will be selective who they hand the baton to.
