Daleks may pose one of the biggest threats to mankind - but they still like a pint and a game of pool.

Punters at The Waterside pub in Shoreham took on the feared enemy of Earth when Simon Drew invited his favourite sidekick down the local.

But his Dalek proved a match for anyone on the pool table. In fact, it exterminated the opposition.

Simon's neighbours in Cheal Close, Shoreham, are getting used to seeing Dr Who's notorious nemesis gliding down the street.

He arrived complete with flashing lights and screeching its familiar catchphrase after Simon won him in an online auction. Now they are inseparable.

Simon, a 49-year-old music publisher, said: "It is not the sort of thing you expect to see going round Shoreham.

"This is something I have always wanted since I was a child and when I came home and opened up the garage door, I grinned from cheek to cheek when I saw him sitting there.

"Everybody in the neighbourhood is talking about it, they will stop and cross the street and when we go past the curtains twitch."

The alien - most-commonly found on the planet Skaro - can be seen travelling through the streets of Shoreham at least twice a week under the watchful eyes of Simon and his eight-year-old son Ben.

The pair like to accompany the latest addition to the family as he propels himself along the road, squirting water at any enemies.

The model was built as a fancy dress costume by a Dr Who fan in Nottingham.

Simon said: "I am reliving a dream that I had back in my childhood and I was never scared of Daleks - I was just fascinated by them.

"My brother helped me bid for it while I was on holiday in Cyprus as he had promised to build me one when we were kids."

The £3,000 replica can be controlled by sitting inside the model, which has a voicebox fitted to mutate the sound of human speech into the character's famously terrifying pitch.

The alien is based on the same dimensions as the television Daleks, which will be among the displays at a Dr Who exhibition on Palace Pier in Brighton from Saturday.

Simon said: "We have had to stop him trying to exterminate people, although he does only shoot water.

"I am sure we will all go to the Dr Who exhibition and he might even meet a Dalek relative or two."
