I am puzzled by British attitudes to road safety.

Every day, people are killed in car crashes. The drivers are often drunk or are on drugs.

The British accept this and protest against speed cameras but write many letters about the dangers of being hit by cyclists.

Being hit by a car usually involves a lot of pain and can even result in death.

Being hit by a cyclist will, in most cases, mean a bruise or two.

And the British walk and park in cycle lanes, too.

In Belgium, we respect cyclists and they respond with courtesy.

One day, the roads will come to a standstill and then cycling will be seen as the only answer.

All these cars with just one person inside are not sustainable. One way or another, cars will be the death of us unless we give them up.
