Mushtaq Ahmed has revealed how he played through the pain barrier to help Sussex thrash county champions Warwickshire.
The brilliant leg spinner returned match figures of 8-138 to help his side to their first Championship win of the season by an innings and 87 runs at Hove yesterday.
After taking 4-73 in the first innings he took 4-65 when Warwickshire followed on. His second victim, England hopeful Ian Bell, was his 200th first-class wicket for the county.
But Mushtaq will need intensive treatment on his right knee before next Wednesday's C&G Trophy tie against Nottinghamshire.
He said: "I had an operation in 1996 on my knee and since then it has been fine but it is causing me lots of pain. I wouldn't have been on the field if I hadn't been bowling."
Mushtaq also had to contend with a strong cross-wind but it did not seem to affect his control too much as his remarkable renaissance continued.
He added: "This was an absolutely brilliant win for the boys. Scoring 400 puts pressure on any side but when you have such a varied attack as ours you always have a chance, it was a great team performance.
"I don't take a lot of notice of records and I didn't know Bell was my 200th wicket. That sort of thing is more of an honour for the club than for me."
Sussex are back in action on Sunday when they play Bangladesh in a three-day friendly (10.45am).
