More than 200 parents and children protested against plans for a £10 million waste plant.

Waste firm Onyx plans to build the transfer station in Hollingdean Lane, Brighton, but people living nearby are worried about the extra traffic and pollution the plant could generate.

Hundreds demonstrated outside Brighton Town Hall in Bartholomew Square yesterday.

Children brought flowers and placards they had made with slogans such as No To Toxic Waste and No Air Pollution.

Mother-of-three Melanie White, of Hollingbury Road, Brighton, is one of the leaders of the Dump The Dump campaign.

She said: "It is the first demonstration we have had and it went better than I had hoped. It was good to see all the community coming together.

"A lot of the children were down there with placards and flowers. We asked all of them to make flowers and bring them, to show we want to keep our city smelling sweet."
