James Greed asks about the Eastbourne tramway (Letters, May 11).
This ran from Princes Park to the Crumbles on a 2ft gauge and operated from 1953 to 1969, after which it was transferred to Seaton, Devon, to replace a railway line closed by the notorious Dr Beeching.
Mr Greed went on to raise the issue of the Marina monorail.
Anyone who knows anything about transport realises this scheme is a non-starter and has been proposed to attract investment to the Marina.
The trouble with monorails is that they only have one central concrete rail in which you cannot have points and, therefore, no passing loops.
The pair of battery-operated cars proposed for this system are said to be capable of carrying fewer than the 80 passengers which can be accommodated on a two-cartrain on Volk's Electric Railway already.
I know because I drive one from time to time.
I look forward to the time when Volk's is extended to run from the Palace Pier into the marina.
