A public school wants to build a new arts centre to show off its students' "breathtaking" work.
Brighton College has submitted a planning application to Brighton and Hove City Council for a £1.2 million four-storey glass building that would glow at night.
Headteacher Anthony Seldon said: "It's a completely new building and it will look fabulous.
"We want something made of glass that will look fantastic from the outside and be an amazing space to work in.
"Art is as good at Brighton College as it is at any school in Great Britain.
"The quality of art our students produce is breath-taking and is estimated to be as good as that of final year undergraduates.
"We have an amazing art department but its current buildings are small, cramped and dark."
The college in Eastern Road teaches more than 1,200 pupils from the age of three up to 18 and fees range from £3,000 to £13,000 a year.
Mr Seldon said he wanted the visual arts centre which has been designed by architects Miller Bourne to complement the college's Victorian architecture, to be available for use by the community.
If planning permission is granted, construction on the new building would begin in September and it would open next May.
